Location and Site

House 2 is located on a site just below House 1 with views of snow covered peaks of Trishul and Nanda Devi to its North.

The site is located at a height of 7000 ft. above sea level in the Kumaon area of Uttarakhand. The site experiences a wide temperature range from 32 deg. C to -7 deg. C. It also receives rainfall for an average 80 days in a year.

Organization, Structure and Material

The blocks of the house are sited over two terraces. Block 1, which is sited at a lower terrace, is a two storey structure with access to terrace in the front from the lower floor and access to the rear from the upper floor. Block 2 is located on the upper terrace as a single storey structure.

To increase the speed of construction and manage the overall weight of the building, a composite structure strategy is followed where the lower floor of block 1 which is set against the ground is made is RC, where as the upper floor has a steel-timber-LGFS composite structure. Reclaimed timber has been used for roof timber rafters in the project.

200mm thick gabion wall structure has been used as external wall for both the blocks. The waste smaller stone sourced from House 1 and 3 has been used to infill the gabion frames. Reclaimed timber (Sal and Teak) panels have also been used as façade, internal wall and flooring panels
